McElderry Books
5+ STARS - SIMPLY AMAZING READ!

Synopsis:

In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa's powers for his own dark ends. With the help of the handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister's war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister himself knows their every move and that one of their own has betrayed them.
Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, though her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will; the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?
As their dangerous search for the Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.

This is the second book in the new Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare. Being a HUGE TMI fan, I was having trouble accepting these new characters in this new series. The first book left you with so many questions, and eagerly wanting more. I would first like to say, "wow". This book blew me out of the water. I found myself listening to the audiobook, and then going back and reading the same passage from the physical book. It was totally unpredictable and wild. A complete page turner till the very end.
I have fallen in love with Tessa Grey, from a readers standpoint. She is brave, smart, and slowly emerging from her shell. She loves books, and poetry just as I do. Her heart has been broken by her brother, but she still loves him. The book finally jumps deep into Will's past and sheds light on why he acts like such a jerk and pushes people away. With the truth, I feel sympathetic to his character in new ways. Jem on the other hand is still sweet as can be, and melts my heart. Jem and Will are so different, yet held together by a special bond. Their friendship is bitterly tested in this book.
Every turn of this book secrets are revealed and plots constructed. I loved matching last names to these characters and imagining how they are related to the TMI characters. Then there is Magnus of coarse! Learning more of his past is enlightening and consuming. From his relationship with Camille, to his obvious feelings for Will. Although I believe something will be revealed regarding Magnus and possibly one of Will's family, maybe in the next book! I love that now things coincide with the new TMI books, such as Camille coming back into Magnus's life in COFA.
Of coarse I have to mention the balcony scene...I mean who wouldn't? I think I was blushing! (Ok, maybe also the bedroom scene too)
I only wish I did not have to wait to long in between these books. I read them, or listen way too fast.
Hats off the Cassandra Clare for creating another enigmatic and extraordinary creative series.

Synopsis and photo cover courtesy of Goodreads

Book Review: Legend by Marie Lu

Author: Marie Lu
Release Date: November 29th, 2011
Publisher: G.P. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic's wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic's highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country's most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.

From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths - until the day June's brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family's survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias's death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.

Full of nonstop action, suspense, and romance, this novel is sure to move readers as much as it thrills.

Mildly Spoilery:
I recieved this ARC from a friend and could not wait to read it. I tried to wait till closer to it's release date, but started it anyways. I will start with what I did like about this story. The book is told from both June, and Days' points of views. It was nice to know what they were both thinking and feeling. The dystopic future that she writes about correlates nicely with some names of early revolutionary times, such as Patriots and Colonies. It is like the second coming of America from a tyrannical rule. I liked the scary drama associated with the Republic (government) injected people with viruses just to study them, a true horror.

My biggest problem with this book as in any book I read, it was predictable. You knew June was going to free Day, you knew that they would get away from Republic with the help of the Patriots, and you could guess that Day would want to come back and rescue his little brother. Like a lot of dytopian novels, the way the world ended up messed up is left as a mystery. I do like to know a little about what happened to make the world the way it is supposed to be in the story, but unfortunately there was barely any kind of reference. I also did not feel the world around the characters.

I do not want my review to deter anyone from reading this book. It was a good read, just not one that kept me turning the page itching to know what would happen next. I believe a lot of people will disagree with my review, but this is me, just being honest.

synopsis and photo courtesy of Goodreads
But then the world suddenly changes. An electromagnetic pulse sweeps through the sky zapping every electronic device and killing the vast majority of adults. For those spared, it's a question of who can be trusted and who has changed... Everyone still alive has turned - some for the better (those who acquired a superhuman sense) while others for the worse (those who acquired a taste for human flesh). Desperate to find out what happened and to avoid the zombies that are on the hunt, Alex meets up with Tom - an Army veteran who escaped one war only to find something worse at home - and Ellie, a young girl whose grandfather was killed by the electromagnetic pulse. This improvised family will have to use every ounce of courage they have just to find food, shelter, while fighting off the 'Changed' and those desperate to stay alive. She can’t see how she ever will.
Now, on her sixteenth birthday, she has become the secret wife of a handsome and worldly king—a king whose country is in turmoil. A king who needs the chosen one, not a failure of a princess.
And he’s not the only one who needs her. Savage enemies seething with dark magic are hunting her. A daring, determined revolutionary thinks she could be his people’s savior. And he looks at her in a way that no man has ever looked at her before. Soon it is not just her life, but her very heart that is at stake.
Elisa could be everything to those who need her most. If the prophecy is fulfilled. If she finds the power deep within herself. If she doesn’t die young.
Most of the chosen do.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I do not hand out five stars lightly! I had no idea what is was about when I first picked it up. What a fresh new read! I absolutely adored this book. It was so different to be reading a true YA fantasy novel. Considering the complete engrossment I have had to the Game of Thrones series, this book stood right up there with them.

I was a little thrown back in the beginning with a "plump" seemingly cowardice heroine. Normally YA books have this kick-butt skinny brave chick as the main character. Elise, did not start off as one. It was wonderful to read her transformation into a strong leader, and feel every bit of her story unfold. The book is beautifully written and enchanting down to the last bit. There are twists, turns, intrigue, and betrayals. My second favorite character was Cosme. She was harsh and untrusted to Elise, but in the end you understand why and her true character comes out.

It is a true epic fantasy read (the only thing missing was a dragon.) =0)

photo and synopsis courtesy of Goodreads

Book Review: Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton

Author: Courtney Allison Moulton

Release Date: February 15th, 2011

Publisher: HarperCollins / Katherine Tegen Books

4 Stars - I really liked this book

Synopsis:

This debut, the first novel in a trilogy, is achingly romantic, terrifying, and filled with blistering action.

When seventeen-year-old Ellie starts seeing reapers - monstrous creatures who devour humans and send their souls to Hell - she finds herself on the front lines of a supernatural war between archangels and the Fallen and faced with the possible destruction of her soul.

A mysterious boy named Will reveals she is the reincarnation of an ancient warrior, the only one capable of wielding swords of angelfire to fight the reapers, and he is an immortal sworn to protect her in battle. Now that Ellie's powers have been awakened, a powerful reaper called Bastian has come forward to challenge her. He has employed a fierce assassin to eliminate her - an assassin who has already killed her once.

While balancing her dwindling social life and reaper-hunting duties, she and Will discover Bastian is searching for a dormant creature believed to be a true soul reaper. Bastian plans to use this weapon to ignite the End of Days and to destroy Ellie's soul, ending her rebirth cycle forever. Now, she must face an army of Bastian's most frightening reapers, prevent the soul reaper from consuming her soul, and uncover the secrets of her past lives - including truths that may be too frightening to remember.

This is a great debut novel by a truly unique up and coming author. The book started a little slow to me, but kept me reading to find out more. It was well worth not giving up on. Once things were explained and truths revealed, it became an extremely exciting and compelling read. Warning to those with weak stomachs, there are a few very graphic fight scenes. I will secretly admit to loving the gory battles! I liked the way the author incorporated current pop-culture with Ellie's love of shopping and upper class nature. A lot of YA novels focus on more low to middle class teenagers, probably for more drama, but in this book it gives it a funny/catchy edge.

The story was smooth and uninterrupted. It is a great new concept in YA urban fantasy with lots of twists and unexpected moments. One of my favorite points to this story was the chemistry between Will and Ellie! Their playful, flirty, pick on each other relationship works well.

If you are a fan of Becca Fitzpatricks Hush Hush or Lauren Kates Fallen series, you won't want to miss this!

<span style="color: black; They didn’t understand that once love -- the deliria -- blooms in your blood, there is no escaping its hold. Things are different now. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the governments demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Holoway has always looked forward to the day when she’ll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy.

But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena does the unthinkable: She falls in love.

I will start with the one thing that truly tore my heart out with this book. I believe there are different kinds of love, from friendship, to lovers, to children. The one that broke me apart in this book was the love of a child and their mother. The fact that Lena's mother stays so strong and never quits loving her daughters even when they tried to take it away from her so many times is just gut wrenching to me. The thought of someone taking away the love that I feel to my child just scares the crap out of me. I do not know wear I would be without the love. It is such an indescribable feeling to try to explain to someone who does not have a child. The idea of this book is not only the love of a child, but that love in general is evil. In fact, in this book the word "LOVE" is considered a four letter word. It is frightening that the people after having the surgery turn into mindless zombies, with no feelings. What would we be like without love? Without feeling the way we do? Without loving so greatly? Love is a dangerous thing in so many ways, but what would we be like without it? This book describes a world without love, and it is a scary place.
I liked the idea of this book, and the pace of it. It was very poetically written. Oliver leaves you with a huge cliff hanger, even if it did seem very abrupt. My dislike was that there were no surprises, you could guess what was going to happen. Normally that is a huge downfall to me, but she writes the story so bueatifully I was able to ignore that.

photo and synopsis courtesy of Goodreads

Book Review: Starcrossed, by Josephine Angelini

Author: Josephine Angelini
Release Date: June 2011
Publisher: HarperTeen
4 Stars - Really liked this book, would definitely recommend

Synopsis

How do you defy destiny?

Helen Hamilton has spent her entire sixteen years trying to hide how different she is—no easy task on an island as small and sheltered as Nantucket. And it's getting harder. Nightmares of a desperate desert journey have Helen waking parched, only to find her sheets damaged by dirt and dust. At school she's haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood . . . and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they're destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history.

As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together—and trying to tear them apart.

I had a very hard time getting through the first one-third of this story. Then things started to pull together, and started to make sense. Then I could not put it down! A couple years ago I took a Greek And Roman cultures class (yes, I even got an A) and it was also about the time the movie Troy came out. I was engrossed with the story of Helen, and Paris and the city of Troy. I have always been attracted and interested in Greek and Roman mythology. I am also a huge fan of Percy Jackson, and those books gave middle school kids a glimpse into Greek/Roman culture without the truly devastating parts. This book takes YA to another level, taking it away from vampires, and werewolves, and dystopian fiction. Angelini brings it up a notch introducing a new level of dark tragedy for an older audience. It is a truly haunting love story.
My favorite scene of the whole book is when Helen and Lucas crash into the earth together. Their relationship is complicated, and dangerous. The second book in this series, Dreamless is due in May of 2012. To me this is not soon enough! More forbidden love, action and prophecies!

photo and synopsis courtesy of Goodreads

Series Review: Wicked Lovely, by Melissa Marr

Author: Melissa Marr
Release Dates: Ranged from 2007 to 2010
Publisher: HarperCollins/HarperTeen
5 Stars - Series Rating - LOVED THESE BOOKS

Synopsis for Darkest Mercy

The Summer King is missing; the Dark Court is bleeding; and a stranger walks the streets of Huntsdale, his presence signifying the deaths of powerful fey.
Aislinn tends to the Summer Court, searching for her absent king and yearning for Seth. I could read it in bright sunlight and the batteries lasted forever. I took it to my kids doctor appointment, and proceeded to stow it away in her backpack. Needless to say, I forgot. After a couple days of wondering where the dang thing at went, my kid pulls it from her backpack, and it went downhill from there! She felt so bad! I told her it was not her fault, she didn't know I had put it in her backpack!

So there it is, the reason I am not longer accepting e-books for review, or at least for now. What is worse is that I was in the middle of some really good books! Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #1, Enders Game, Kate Daniels, Magic Bites and Stephan Kings, Full Dark No Stars.

Good luck to everyone out there with still operating e-readers. I guess I just wasn't meant to have one! Magic and the Mob.
Cassel always thought he was an ordinary guy, until he realized his memories were being manipulated by his brothers. Now he knows the truth—he’s the most powerful curse worker around. A touch of his hand can transform anything—or anyone—into something else. That was how Lila, the girl he loved, became a white cat. Cassel was tricked into thinking he killed her, when actually he tried to save her. Now that she’s human again, he should be overjoyed. Trouble is, Lila’s been cursed to love him. And if Lila’s love is as phony as Cassel’s made-up memories, then he can’t believe anything she says or does.

When Cassel’s oldest brother is murdered, the Feds recruit Cassel to help make sense of the only clue—crime-scene images of a woman in red gloves. But the mob is after Cassel too—they know how valuable he could be to them. Cassel is going to have to stay one step ahead of both sides just to survive.

I really enjoyed Jesse Eisenhower narrating this book. When I told a friend who the narrator was, they couldn't imagine him as Cassel. I can see the valid point there, but after listening, I completely get it.

Everything about this book just pulled me in and dropped me ten feet under ground. There is betrayal, intrigue, forbidden love, murder, weird friends, excitement, disturbing people, and crazy family members. Who wouldn't like this series? Mix the mob, paranormal, and a parallel dimension and you have a great read. The story is dark, and I had no idea who the murderer was! I love not being to put it all together till the end, I had predictable stories. I really like how Cassel makes me laugh! I love hearing this story through his point of view. Black leaves you with a cliffhanger, and I can not wait for Black Heart!

synopsis from Goodreads

Book Review: Divergent, by Veronica Roth

Author: Veronica Roth

Release Date: May 2011

Publisher: HarperCollins
4.5 Stars - LOVED this book!

Synopsis: In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

WARNING: Spoilers!

First of all, I loved this book. I only had one real problem with it. I guess I will start with my critizism, and end with my praise.

The only thing that kept me from giving this book a 5 star rating was the serious lack of reaction and grief to her parents deaths. The author really tried to covey a closeness between Tris and her mom, but I didn't really feel it. My biggest issue was her reaction, or lack there of to her mother and fathers deaths. When her mother was shot in front of her, Tris was trying to be brave and move on to save more people. After that she also watched her father shot and killed, and still she pulled through it. That is great, it showed how brave she was. It was how she reacted when the battle was over. Saved the boy, kissed him, and moved on. I have lost both of my parents, and maybe not in the violent fashion that she did, but I can tell you about the extreme amount of grief that I felt. I just wanted more emotion from Tris and the author.

Now for what I loved! Since The Hunger Games, Dystopian fiction has exploded. Divergent brings to life an extremely different future, reminiscent of what would happen if "cliques" from High School took over the world. The choice you make is in complete control of your eminent future, and you can not change it. Your life is set in stone. I loved the idea of the "self-less" leaders. The problem is that we are human, and human beings have always hungered for power and influence. There will always be corrupt, jealous people. I loved the original Dauntless philosophy of facing your fears and living life to its fullest. As usual, it was malformed by power hungry people.

I liked watching Tris transform, face her fears and become her own person. The very beginning of the book, where she gets to sit in from of the mirror for those few minutes was one of my favorite scenes of the entire book. It was heartbreaking, and eyeopening at the same time. Tris stays true to herself by getting tattoos of her family, and not forgetting where she came from.

I haven't figured out if its a good or bad thing when the author leaves out the reason for the fall of our society, she leaves that a mystery. I want to know what is outside of the wall! Are there more societies with their own factions? Are the Dauntless protecting the city from Zombies? What happened to Tris's Friend Christina? Did Al really kill himself or was he a Divergent also?
Hopefully some of these questions will be answered in the next book!

Did I forget to mention how much I LOVED the cover??

Photo and synopsis courtesy of Goodreads

Book Review: Ten Miles Past Normal, by Frances O'Roark Dowell

Author: Frances O'Roark Dowell

Release Date: March 2011

Publisher: Atheneum Books for Young Readers (An imprint if Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing Division)

3.5 Stars - It was a good story

Synopsis: Janie Gorman wants to be normal. The problem with that: she’s not. She’s smart and creative and a little bit funky. She’s also an unwilling player in her parents’ modern-hippy, let’s-live-on-a-goat-farm experiment (regretfully, instigated by a younger, much more enthusiastic Janie). This, to put it simply, is not helping Janie reach that “normal target.” She has to milk goats every day…and endure her mother’s pseudo celebrity in the homemade-life, crunchy mom blogosphere. Goodbye the days of frozen lasagna and suburban living, hello crazy long bus ride to high school and total isolation--and hovering embarrassments of all kinds. The fresh baked bread is good…the threat of homemade jeans, not so much. It would be nice to go back to that old suburban life…or some grown up, high school version of it, complete with nice, normal boyfriends who wear crew neck sweaters and like social studies. So, what’s wrong with normal? Well, kind of everything. She knows that, of course, why else would she learn bass and join Jam Band, how else would she know to idolize infamous wild-child and high school senior Emma (her best friend Sarah’s older sister), why else would she get arrested while doing a school project on a local freedom school (jail was not part of the assignment). And, why else would she kind of be falling in "like" with a boy named Monster—yes, that is his real name. Janie was going for normal, but she missed her mark by about ten miles…and we mean that as a compliment. Frances O’Roark Dowell’s fierce humor and keen eye make her YA debut literary and wise. In the spirit of John Green and E. Lockhart, Dowell’s relatable, quirky characters and clever, fluid writing prove that growing up gets complicated…and normal is WAY overrated.

This book was sent to me from Jennifer at Pretty Fab PR, and I would like to thank her generously for sending me my first book to review!

This was a cute, fast, funny, inspirational read. I loved the the transformation of Janie from the beginning to the end of the book. It is a smart look into the life of a freshman girl trying to find her place in the fragile social realities of high school. She starts out a timid mouse, and blossoms into a strong girl with a relentless pursuit of fairness in the world. She wants to change the world, she wants to make a difference. Her anecdotes of her goat Loretta Lynn made me laugh out load. I loved the casual naming of the goats after country music stars, and the baseball reference in Ty Cobb. If there had been a cow named Joe Montana, it would have been perfect! My jaw dropped when she was arrested! Not what I was expecting. I loved her relationship with her mother. She learned to accept her in the end, and having been a teenager once, I hope that is what all teenage girls are able to do as the get older.

Although this book is not within my normal genre lately, I still liked this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes a good heartwarming book to read and laugh with.

photo and synopsis courtesy of Goodreads

Book Review: City of Fallen Angels, by Cassandra Clare

Author: Cassandra Clare
Release Date: April 5th, 2011
Publisher: Simon and Schuster Children's Publishing Division
4.5 Stars - Loved this book, will read over again!

Synopsis: The Mortal War is over, and Clary Fray is back home in New York, excited about all the possibilities before her. She's training to become a Shadowhunter and to use her unique power. Her mother is getting married to the love of her life. Downworlders and Shadowhunters are at peace at last. And—most important of all—Clary can finally call Jace her boyfriend.
But nothing comes without a price.
Someone is murdering the Shadowhunters who used to be in Valentine's Circle, provoking tensions between Downworlders and Shadowhunters that could lead to a second bloody war. Clary's best friend, Simon, can't help her. His mother just found out that he's a vampire and now he's homeless. Everywhere he turns, someone wants him on their side—along with the power of the curse that's wrecking his life. And they're willing to do anything to get what they want. At the same time he's dating two beautiful, dangerous girls—neither of whom knows about the other.
When Jace begins to pull away from Clary without explaining why, she is forced to delve into the heart of a mystery whose solution reveals her worst nightmare: She herself has set in motion a terrible chain of events that could lead to her losing everything she loves. Even Jace.
Love. Blood. Betrayal. Revenge. The stakes are higher than ever in City of Fallen Angels.

I have never been quite when it comes to my love of this author. The first three books in this series are some of my favorite books ever read! When I finished the first three, I ended up re-reading them over and over again till I knew them cover to cover. As soon as I found out there would be a fourth book in this series I was ecstatic. But I questioned how she could continue this story, when it all seemed to come together at the end of the third book. I never should have questioned Cassandra Clare and her ability to take me into this world, keep me questioning and shock me half to death! I have now labeled her "The Queen of Cliffhangers".

I tried to slowly read this book, take in everything I could. Well, that was thrown out the window as soon as Sebastian re-entered the picture. I could not put it down, I spent nights snuggled up on the couch ignoring my motherly duties as the dishes and laundry piled up around me. I loved the suspense, the drama and the complete involvement of all the characters and more from the first three books. I got to know Simon more and feel his pain, resentment and shame as he struggles with his new vampire-hood. I learned that Isabelle is not cold hearted, she is just protective of her heart to an immeasurable point. I loved the tie in to Clockwork Angel with Magnus and Camille. And I fell in love with Jace all over again.

The foreshadowing involved in this book gives some clues to what may or may not be next. My heart completely stopped when Lilith's mark started to once again burn on Jace's chest, and Sebastian called him to him. Did Sebastian posses Jace? Is he going to body snatch him and try to trick Clary? Will Sabastian rise as a Vampire even if he didn't ingest any of Simon's blood? So many questions!

Clare weaves an intricately mesmerizing story that takes me to the very world I love of Shadowhunters. I will read her books over and over again, and I am so excited that my kid will be old enough to read them soon and we will be able to share them together. I know she will love them as much as I do!

picture and synopsis courtesy of Goodreads

Book Review of Matched, By Ally Condie

Author: Ally Condie

Release Date: November 2010

Publisher: Dutton Juvanille

4 Stars - Really liked this book, would recommend

Synopsis: Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

I have been engrossed with the action packed Jim Butcher lately, so grabbing this book was like changing a switch in my head. I was going back and forth between a brutal war and hidden war. Matched is not for someone looking for an action packed book Matched is a beautifully written story about love and the choices we make.
I am a huge YA dystopian fiction addict. Some of my favorite authors include Suzanne Collins, Scott Westerfeld, and Carrie Ryan. I now can add a new author to that category! Her words flow like poetry throughout the book. Her descriptions and thoughts are mesmerizing. I was afraid this would just be another teen love triangle, but it is so much more then that. Condie has created a genuine new, strong, heroine in Cassia. She has to choose between a life that is easy and handed to her, and I life of unknowns. It takes courage for someone to step outside the box and try for a life that is not easy.
The premise of "The Society", a government in complete control of your life, deciding how much you can eat, exercise, and when you die, scares the crap out of me. Life is about the choices we make, and it defines us as a culture and human beings. This book is a scary realization of what would happen and how life would be without those choices that we all take for granted everyday. Some people may read this and see a love story, but I see a story of a future world of rebellion and tragedy. My only problem with this story was the lack of back story. There were no real hints to how the world ended up like this. I believe a lot will be revealed later in the series, and I can't wait to find out.

synopsis and photo courtesy of Goodreads

Series Review: The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

4.5 Stars for the Series
5 Stars for Changes - Will read again and again

I have been so engrossed in the series I haven't posted anything on my blog for weeks!! I didn't want to take the time to write a review of each book individually because the 12 books as a whole mesh together into one huge epic story so well.
Harry Dresden is a wizard for hire, seriously it says that in his add in the yellow pages. He has a 30 pound cat named Mister, a talking skull with emence knowledge, and a chivalrous attitude that gets him into heaps of trouble. He stands up to injustice and fights for what is right no matter the cost or who it pisses off. Later in the series he inherits a dog named mouse also, who ends up to be more then just a dog. Harry stands up against black magic users, vampires, faeries and monsters alike. And somehow he always gets out of impossible situations. He always has some snarky come back that he lets lose even at the least opportune time that he shouldn't. He makes me laugh so hard that my husband thinks I am crazy. Harry is the main character, but the supporting characters that surround him are just as great. My favorite is Lieutenant Karrin Murphy. At first she believes he is the criminal, but after seeing into his world she comes to realize that he is not. She ends up being the best side kick, even at only 5 feet tall.
I don't want to give to much away, but I want to convince anyone that they need to read these books, they were simply amazing to me. After each book I was dying to devour the next till the extremely climactic end that left me laughing , and then crying out right. Each book in the series has its own plot, but there is a flowing sub-plot through the rest. An underlying foreshadowing that makes you want know what happens so bad you dream about it. Its not just the story itself, its the way Jim Butcher writes. He is simply amazing. He weaves this world for you with descriptive words that make you see and feel everything. The only problem with that is the nightmares that could accompany his descriptions of events such as a persons heart exploding from their body! I found his descriptions of demons, dead bodies, fairies and other paranormal creatures fascinating.
I am so sad that I am done with series. The way the end of the twelve book ended was heartbreaking!! I have been emotionally vested in the characters for a better part of two months, and I am sad to be done.
On a last note, I have a huge issue with too much sex in fantasy fiction. I don't mind a little, but some of it gets quite disturbing. This series kept it cool, and didn't pass over that fine line of a fiction to pornography. I loved that.
So if you like fantasy with great characters that make you fall in love with them, great action scenes, scary monsters and a sad love story, I highly recommend these books. This series is one of my all time favorites. The last book though, blew all the others out of the park, I think I might even read it again soon.
I also ask that if you have read these books, can you recommend another series to me that is similar?
Thanks! And Happy Reading!

Top Ten Tuesdays!

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

I love finding a new meme, and although I don't post them every week, I try to do something every now and then.

Nor Cal Book Blogs top ten favorite authors (in no particular order)

1. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

First of all I would like to say that I LOVED this cover! Its dramatic and beautiful. My only problem with it, is that it makes the book seem darker and more dramatic than it really is. I know, don't judge a book by its cover right? Well I did! I thought this was going to be a dark paranormal romance. Instead it was fun, cute and a little sad. I think the author meant for it to be on the darker side, but I just did not see it that way. I did totally laugh at the fact that she uses a pink taser (named Tasey) to take down paranormals. The whole joke about neutering paranormals was funny too. The relationship between Evie and Lend is really cute. Unfortunately that's all it was to me, cute. There was no interesting dynamic. I liked the concept behind this book, a secret agency taking down paranormals, with an strong female lead that finds herself an outsider, trying to take down the corrupt agency. The writing was just too bland for me, not enough in depth description and the other characters besides Evie and Lend just fall flat.

I did enjoy this as a light read in between some pretty heavy stuff. If you need a break and want something that will entertain you and make you laugh, and warm your heart with a cute teenage romance, pick this up!

picture and synopsis courtesy of Goodreads

Author: Cassandra Clare
Release Date: August 31st, 2010
4.5 Stars - Loved it, and will read again before the next book in the series

Synopsis: Magic is dangerous—but love is more dangerous still.
When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.
Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What's more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own.
Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by—and torn between—two best friends: Jem, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length...everyone, that is, but Tessa.
As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world...and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

**Mildly Spoilery**

I am not quite sure where to start! I have so many thoughts, I hope that I can convey them well. I have to admit that being such a huge Mortal Instruments fan I subconsciously kept comparing the plot and characters. Although I did see similarities, it wasn't enough to not let this book stand alone. I did not give it 5 stars, only because I didn't like it as much as the Mortal Instruments.

The setting is early London where women are still expected to wear dresses and marry a wealthy husband.

I love how Clare writes and describes London so crisply I feel like I am there. Especially her description of the skyline in the end of the book. She puts you right in the middle of the action scenes, every hit, every cut, every swipe of a blade you feel it. Some authors do not describe their characters looks, and I think that is a huge downfall. Clare describes hers to down to every detail. She spend a lot of time on Will's eyes, and I am wondering why? The contrast between Will and Jem, goes back to the light versus dark thing. Reminds me of the old western movies where the good cowboy wore the white hat, and the bad wore the black. Although I do not think Will is inherently bad to the core, he really rubbed me the wrong way. I am dying to know his true story and why he is the way he is. Jem is so kind and sweet, and you feel so sad for him. You can see the triangle forming between Jem, Will and Tessa. Although, I can not see a future for any of them together. But that's the point right? Its not supposed to be easy or set in stone. I think my favorite character if I had to choose would be Tessa. She is betrayed by the only person she can trust, treated like crud by the one person she feels affection for, and still walks away with her head held high. She transforms throughout the book, and I think she will keep changing throughout the series. I loved Henry too, his bumbling scientific mind and his tendency to be looked down upon. I do not believe that Charlotte only married him to be able to run the institute, I believe she really does love him.

I spent a lot of time thinking more of the characters then the actual story. But that's what I like to read. A story with bland characters bores me to death. The story itself was wonderful, full of action, suspense, treachery, and a little romance, just the way I like it.

This book left me wanting more, and with about a hundred questions! What is the Clockwork Angel? What was Tessa's purpose? Who is her mother? What is Tessa? Why is Will such a jerk! What did Will want of Magnus? Will they find a cure for Jem? And most of all...will the whole town of London be rampaged by an outbreak of Demon Pox?? I am sure these questions will be addressed in the upcoming books. Ultimately Clare leaves me wanting more...more...more..MORE!!

Photo and synopsis courtesy of Goodreads

Author: Suzanne Collins
Release Date: August 24th 2010
5 Stars - Loved it, will read again and again

Synopsis: Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she’s made it out of the bloody arena alive, she’s still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what’s worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss’s family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins’s groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises to be one of the most talked about books of the year.

***WARNING - SPOILERS***

This will not be a spoiler free review. How could it be? There is way too much to be said about this conclusion to the Hunger Games. I picked up the Hunger Games on a whim when Catching Fire was about to be released. I was very curious of how a book could cause such a ruckus. After reading it, I understood. It had everything, action, love sacrifice and truly intriguing characters. I loved both books, and Mockingjay ends the series with a huge bang. I was having a hard time with the military and war angle of the beginning of the book. I just have this aversion to war. When they finally rescued Peeta I started to dive deep into it. Katniss and Gale's relationship was obviously doomed. Of coarse she would end up with Peeta in the end. Although I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that there was no way she could forgive Gale for the role that he played in Prims death. I loved about this book because I had no idea who was trustworthy or not. And in the end, my hunch that Coin was just as evil as Snow was confirmed. I feel sorry for Katniss, she was underestimated and used throughout the entire series. Only a few people knew her for what she was. She wasn't the hero, but she was brave and believed in what was right and stood up for it. She was not perfect by any means and had faults that defined her as a human being. You felt her pain, and knew you would have felt the same way. I am not shy to say that I was crying at midnight last night while reading the end. When Katniss finally came to terms of Prims death in her victors home in district 12 and unleashed all her emotions, I just couldn't help it. I guess when you think about it, there was no way Prim would live, this was set up from the first book when her name was called for the reaping. It still broke my heart. This whole book actually broke my heart. I truly hope that our society never comes to this point. The scary thing is there are people out there that would use children as human shields and not bat an eye in the end.
The book as a whole was an enigmatic, sad, frightening ride to the end. After about chapter 23 I could not put it down. I don't usually like books that make me cry, but I will give this one an exception. I am having a hard time really describing the depth to which this book took me. These books are so much deeper with symbolism that I can't even begin to discuss. I would love to discuss other peoples opinions of this book, if you have read it, please comment.

synopsis and photo from Goodreads I will admit to spending hours and probably thousands of dollars there. I am just sick of the impersonal staff and exploited books. So I decided to take a little trip and do a Bookstore Crawl with my 10 year old daughter. It was a blast! We had so much fun together! Our very first store sold new, and used books. As we perused the kids section we came upon some funny looking Harry Potter books. My daughter is currently reading The Order of the Phoenix and loves the series. Come to find out they had almost the whole series in the UK covers. She ended up having to have the Goblet of Fire with the Hungarian Horntail on it. She wanted all of them off coarse! But I said no. Bad mom! We also ended up finding I good used copy of The Deathy Hallows, the one book she did not have already.

We ended up at a comic book store of all places! Surrounded by inappropriate scary things for a ten year old! They had a small shelf of used books. As soon as I saw the book, my heart just dropped. You see my mom passed away a couple of years ago. She is the reason why I read so much. Some of her favorite authors were Stephan King, and Anne McCaffrey. There on the shelf was a pristine paperback copy of Dragonsdawn. The same book that I would shift through when I was young and try to read, but was too young to get it. Next to it were two other Anne McCaffrey's, All the Weyrs of Pern and The Skies of Pern. I snatched all three of them up! I can't begin to tell you the memories these books have brought back to me and how happy I am to have found them. Next I am going to have to find some of the Clan of the Cave Bear!

Oh, and did I mention this cool Hunger Games swag I was given free for Pre-Ordering Mockingjay from our local bookstore? Thirty-two minutes for one world to die, another to be born."

First, the unthinkable: a security breach at a secret U.S. government facility unleashes the monstrous product of a chilling military experiment. Then, the unspeakable: a night of chaos and carnage gives way to sunrise on a nation, and ultimately a world, forever altered. All that remains for the stunned survivors is the long fight ahead and a future ruled by fear—of darkness, of death, of a fate far worse.

As civilization swiftly crumbles into a primal landscape of predators and prey, two people flee in search of sanctuary. FBI agent Brad Wolgast is a good man haunted by what he’s done in the line of duty. Six-year-old orphan Amy Harper Bellafonte is a refugee from the doomed scientific project that has triggered apocalypse. He is determined to protect her from the horror set loose by her captors. But for Amy, escaping the bloody fallout is only the beginning of a much longer odyssey—spanning miles and decades—towards the time and place where she must finish what should never have begun.

I will admit that when I finished this book I was pissed. How could it end that way? Why would he not finish the story? After tweeting about it, another book blogger brought it to my attention that it is a trilogy. At this point I had to take a step back and revise my thoughts about this book.

First, the characters. Cronin's ability to put you into the heads and hearts of his characters is simply amazing. I cared for these people, felt their fears and cried tears for them. The young girl Amy just about breaks my heart. She is so alone in the world. Her journey through the demolished world must have been horrible. Carrying the burden of all the souls with her the whole time.

The story itself is sad, creepy, and downright morbid in some spots. I have been reading a lot of "end of the world" books lately and this one takes the cake in depressing! The thought that our entire civilization could be destroyed by some ignorant Army personnel who use murders as science experiments just freaks me out! It is definitely not a sugar coated story. Everyone dies, and vampires do not sparkle! The vampires in this story, are ruthless blood sucking murderous monsters who kill everything in sight.

I liked the fact that this book kept me reading. It was extremely long, but the rhythm of the story was good and it flowed well. There is some down time that divulges deeper into the characters themselves, but I think its what made me care.

This book is not for the faint of heart. If you are looking for a light-hearted quick read, you better skip this. It is a long, dark, disturbing, epic novel. I eagerly await the second book, although I think it is about two years away.

<span style="color: white; Everyone disappears. Gone. Everyone except for the young. Teens. Middle Schoolers. Toddlers. But not a single adult. No teachers, no cops, no doctors, no parents. Gone, too, are the phones, internet, and the television. There is no way to get help.

Hunger threatens. Bullies rule. A sinister creature lurks. Animals are mutating. And the teens themselves are changing, developing new talents - unimaginable, dangerous, deadly powers - that grow stronger by the day.

Its a terrifying new world. Sides are being chosen and war is imminent.
The first in a breathtaking saga about teens battling each other and their darkest selves, Gone is a page turning thriller that will make you look at the world in a whole new way.

I really wasn't even planning on reading this book. The only reason I picked it up was because Barnes and Nobles had a section that said if you liked Hunger Games, you would like this....well I LOVE the Hunger Games, and it was also recommended by Stephen King. So I am thinking, slam dunk right? Well I did like it. I liked the fact that I had no idea where the plot was going or what was going to happen exactly. I liked the page turning drama and action. I even shamefully liked the dark grotesque parts. The one thing that kept coming to mind was that it was a cross between Heroes, and Lord of the Flies. The scary part is that this could be the way kids would act if all adults were removed.

The things that I did not like, for one I there was no character development. The main character Sam is supposed to be the shy hero, except I didn't really buy it. I did like the character of Lana, her healing powers throw her into predicaments she is uncomfortable with and she triumphs over them. She also has a Lab for a dog that she saves, and I am kind of partial to labs. I also did not care for the talking coyotes, and this thing in the darkness, kinda cheesy to me.

I would like to mention that in conjunction with reading this book, I was reading The Passage by Justin Cronin. I think I need to read something a little lighter and not about the end of the world next! With all said and done, I am rating it a 4 because I did enjoy the fact that it sucked me in and kept me entertained. I am currently reading the next book, Hunger now.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Alone in the world, she was rescued and taken in by the mysterious Callum, the Alpha of his werewolf pack. Now fifteen, Bryn's been raised as a human among werewolves, adhering to the pack rule (mostly). Little fazes her.

But the pack's been keeping a secret, and when Bryn goes exploring against Callum's direct orders, she finds Chase, a newly turned Were locked in a cage. Terrifying memories of the attack on her mom and dad come flooding back. Bryn needs answers, and she needs Chase to get them. Suddenly, all allegiances to the pack no longer matter. Its Bryn and Chase against the werewolf world, whatever the consequence.

I completely jumped into this book since one of my all time favorite authors recommended it. I was so excited to read it. The last book that was recommended by the same author was Sunshine by Robin McKinley, and I loved that book. The first couple of chapters brought me to a bloody world of a teenager raised by werewolves (title didn't give that away did it?). She was saved by Callum as a kid from a rogue werewolf, but can not remember the details. Her best friend is a werewolf who likes Broadway music and show tunes. She meets this boy who was bitten by a werewolf and instantly falls for him, just by looking at him. This is where the book starts to lose me. I am so tired of these young girls just instantly falling for some cute boy. I know that the author wanted to portray some kind of underlying connection between the two of them, but for me the chemistry just did not work. The repetitive nature of how the pack thinks together got a little annoying. Without adding too many spoilers, the book slowly goes through a plot that I found very predictable to the end and with yet also, a predictable ending. I think I have been just a little jaded by many predictable books lately, so maybe I am being a little harsh. In the end it, I found it almost painful to finish and I kept skipping paragraphs just to get to the ending that I already knew was going to happen. On a good note, I did like the depth to where she took the book in reference to the pack mentality. She showed how their family's can be close, disciplined, and yet still love and respect each other.

Author: Jackson Pearce
Released: June 2010
5 stars...loved it, will read it over and over

Sisters Red is a tale of two sisters, Scarlett March and Rosie March. When Scarlett was young, she lost her eye defending her sister against a werewolf, otherwise known as a Fenris. The two sisters grow up inseparable. The bond between the two sisters seems to be unbreakable until Scarlett's best friend and hunting partner Silas comes back into their lives. Rosie is torn between her sisters need to hunt the fenris down and the her need and compulsion for a normal life.

I was thoroughly engrossed with this book, and could not put it down. I love the play on little red riding hood. Pearce sucks you into a dark world with characters to relate to. The love and commitment between the sisters is something I can understand, and anyone else with a sister would also. The booked flowed well, between the action sequences (not for the faint of heart) and camaraderie of the three friends. The plot was a little predictive, but I was alright with it. I was completely in love with the weapon of choice by Scarlett, the hatchet. How great was that? This was the first book I have read in awhile, that I couldn't wait to read, but didn't want it to be over yet. Sisters Red took me somewhere no one else has, and I loved it.

Welcome

This is my attempt at having my own book blog, for reviews and other things.
