Series Review: The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

4.5 Stars for the Series
5 Stars for Changes - Will read again and again

I have been so engrossed in the series I haven't posted anything on my blog for weeks!! I didn't want to take the time to write a review of each book individually because the 12 books as a whole mesh together into one huge epic story so well.
Harry Dresden is a wizard for hire, seriously it says that in his add in the yellow pages.  He has a 30 pound cat named Mister, a talking skull with emence knowledge, and a chivalrous attitude that gets him into heaps of trouble.  He stands up to injustice and fights for what is right no matter the cost or who it pisses off.  Later in the series he inherits a dog named mouse also, who ends up to be more then just a dog.  Harry stands up against black magic users, vampires, faeries and monsters alike.  And somehow he always gets out of impossible situations.  He always has some snarky come back that he lets lose even at the least opportune time that he shouldn't.  He makes me laugh so hard that my husband thinks I am crazy.  Harry is the main character, but the supporting characters that surround him are just as great.  My favorite is Lieutenant Karrin Murphy.  At first she believes he is the criminal, but after seeing into his world she comes to realize that he is not.  She ends up being the best side kick, even at only 5 feet tall.
I don't want to give to much away, but I want to convince anyone that they need to read these books, they were simply amazing to me.  After each book I was dying to devour the next till the extremely climactic end that left me laughing , and then crying out right.  Each book in the series has its own plot, but there is a flowing sub-plot through the rest.  An underlying foreshadowing that makes you want know what happens so bad you dream about it.  Its not just the story itself, its the way Jim Butcher writes.  He is simply amazing.  He weaves this world for you with descriptive words that make you see and feel everything.  The only problem with that is the nightmares that could accompany his descriptions of events such as a persons heart exploding from their body!  I found his descriptions of demons, dead bodies, fairies and other paranormal creatures fascinating.
I am so sad that I am done with series.  The way the end  of the twelve book ended was heartbreaking!!  I have been emotionally vested in the characters for a better part of two months, and I am sad to be done.
On a last note, I have a huge issue with too much sex in fantasy fiction.  I don't mind a little, but some of it gets quite disturbing.  This series kept it cool, and didn't pass over that fine line of a fiction to pornography. I loved that.
So if you like fantasy with great characters that make you fall in love with them, great action scenes, scary monsters and a sad love story, I highly recommend these books.  This series is one of my all time favorites.  The last book though, blew all the others out of the park, I think I might even read it again soon.
I also ask that if you have read these books, can you recommend another series to me that is similar?
Thanks! And Happy Reading!
